patterned carpet in bright living room

There is so much to today’s carpet market. So much to pay attention to and think about. When you go to a carpet store, you have so many samples to look at and fibers to consider. Not to mention the color and the patterns to look at. Don't worry, though; Genoa Custom Interiors is here to help you make sense of it all. So let's make this easy.

What are your requirements?

So you want to hone in on the requirements for this carpet. Here are some questions to get you started: What room are you carpeting? Is this high or low traffic, and is the carpet in the dark or daylight? Is it a large carpet or a small one? What do you use the space for? Does the carpet need to be extra durable? Does it need to have stain resistance? Lastly and most importantly: How big is your budget?

Research your carpet

Now you look at the carpet itself. Discover the five fibers that manufacturers use: nylon, wool, polyester, triexta, and olefin. Research the characteristics of each. Look at natural fibers vs. synthetic ones. Usually, the decision will come down to which fiber you like the most. Then look at the construction styles of the manufacturers. These are Berber, Saxony, cut pile, high pile, low pile, looped, etc. Finally, decide what type of construction you want for your desired fiber.

Quality

At this stage, you should look at the carpet itself. First, check the density of the rug (this is how closely the fibers are tufted). The density for a home carpet should be at 3,000. Be sure to check this yourself. Check the sample card. If you bend it and see a lot of white space, ask the store clerk why. Another determining factor is the twist number. It ranges from one to five. The higher the number, the less chance the carpet will come undone and unravel on you. That number should be somewhere between 3 and 5.
