When you search for the best carpeting, you'll hear the term "pile" more than once. Therefore, knowing what it is and how it can affect your flooring choices is essential.

It's an essential part of the flooring, so be sure to learn what you can before you shop. Here are some facts to help with that.

What is the carpet pile?

Pile refers to the carpet fiber above the backing that you can see and feel. It's the part of the flooring that you interact with daily.

Different terms go along with it, such as carpeting pile height and pile density. Each has specific attributes that can make it an essential part of your experience.

The importance of pile height

This term describes the length of the carpet fibers and includes low, medium, and high piles. Each one caters to a specific lifestyle, including the following:

  • Low-pile - fibers are less than 1/4 inch high
  • Medium-pile - fibers range from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch high
  • High-pile - fibers range from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch high

Types of carpet pile

Loop-pile is a floor covering option created when the fiber is passed through the backing without shearing. This option includes level, textured, multi-level, and unique loop options.

Cut pile sees the fiber passed through the backing, and the fiber gets sheared. This exposes the ends of the fiber and creates a different feel underfoot.
